Badminton

Badmintn is a popular social and competitive sport at Hillcrest Primary School and we have an ‘A’ Squad, a ‘B’ Squad and a Social squad which is well attended. Our A & B Squads plays weekly fixtures on a Wednesday afternoon in Term 2. Both teams compete in the ‘A’ League with our A side winning the league every year for the past 5 years now. We have 4 courts marked out in our Multi-purpose Hall and in Term 4 we play our Inter-House and School Champs. We have Boys and Girls representing both the District and KZN Schools yearly.

Cricket

Cricket is a popular sport for our boys at Hillcrest Primary School and is played in the summer months, in the first and fourth terms. Our Grades 1 and 2’s play mini-cricket, with our Gr. 2’s playing matches every Friday afternoon. Our Grade 3 boys also play Mini Cricket on a Saturday morning and our A’s and B’s are also introduced to hardball and play midweek hardball matches. Our U10’s, U11’s and 1st’s to 4th’s in the open age group play weekly fixtures on Wednesday/Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

The under 11A team participates in the Kearsney T20 Tournament every year and the 1st Teams play regular 6-a-side and T20 Tournaments and have the opportunity to participate in overnight tours, where they get to play against schools outside our district and province.

Cross-Country
Cross-Country is a popular sport at Hillcrest Primary School in the second term. League cross-country runs take place on Friday afternoons at the various schools, with the last Friday run being our ward/district trials. Not only is cross-country for the running enthusiasts, but also for those hockey, soccer and rugby players wanting to improve or maintain their fitness levels. We have had a number of District Reps over the years.
Chess
Chess remains a popular sport at HPS and is offered from right from Gr.1 – 7. League matches take place on Mondays in the SP and then there are regular Saturday morning tournaments at the likes of Northlands, Glenwood, Clifton, Chelsea and HPS, that take place throughout the year for our Grade 3-7 pupils. We again have had a number of KZN and District Reps over the years.
Hockey
Hockey is a major part of sport at Hillcrest Primary School and has grown tremendously and achieved wonderful results in the past few years. This sport is played in the 3rd Term for the girls and the boys. Grades 1-3 play 6-a-side mini-hockey, with mini-tournaments every Thursday afternoon. The U10s also play 6-a-side and U11s 8-a-side, with fixtures on Wednesday/Thursday afternoons. The U13s play full-field 11-a-side hockey and play league fixtures every Wednesday/Thursday afternoon or Saturday mornings. Both the Girls’ and Boys’ 1st Teams have the opportunity every year to tour to various parts of the country and participate in regular Prep Schools’ Festivals. Every year we have a number of Boys and Girls making our PADSSA District and then going on to make KZN Schools as well.
Netball
Netball is played by our girls from Grades 2 to 7, while our Grade 1 girls do netball ball skills to introduce them to the game. Our Grade 2’s and 3’s play weekly mini-tournaments on a Thursday afternoon in the 4th Term to prepare them for the 1st Term, which is our main netball term for our senior primary girls. We currently have U10A, B & C; U11A, B & C; U12A & B and U13A, B & C so a very popular sport amongt our girls. Our 1st Team also participates in the Gelofte Night Series in Term 1, various Prep Schools Festivals in Term 2 and tour annually to The Wykeham Collegiate, Eshowe or down the South Coast. We have girls regularly making District representation and KZN Action Netball teams every year.
Rugby
Rugby is a major sport played almost all year round at HPS. In Term 1 our 1st Team participates in the Gelofte Night Series every Thursday afternoon/evening. In the second term our Grade 3-7’s all play rugby and have weekly midweek or Saturday fixtures. Our U9’s play in various Festivals at Gelofte, Northdene and TMC, our U10’s play in our very own HPS U10 Festival hosted on Family Fun Day and our 1st’s also have the opportunity to participate in regular Prep Schools’ Festivals and 7’s Tournaments and tour once year as well which is always a highlight. Every year we have a number of Boys making our PADSSA District and then going on to make KZN Schools as well.
Soccer

Soccer at Hillcrest Primary School has a longstanding history. It is played in the second term from Grade 1-7. Grades 1-3 play 7-a-side mini-soccer, with mini-tournaments every Thursday afternoon. The U10s, U11s and opens play either 7-a-side, 9-a-side or full-field 11-a-side soccer and play league fixtures on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons. The Boys 1st Team also competes in the League Cup in Term 2 and then both the Boys and Girls teams play in regular Festivals throughout the term.

In Term 3 our U12 Boys play 7’s Rugby and participate in 3 big 7’s Tournaments at DHS, Hillcrest High and Michaelhouse. In the 4th Term we play Boys and Girls Touch Rugby from Gr. 4-7 as a way of keeping the fitness levels going, keeping them playing the game, learning the rules and developing their skills.

Softball
Softball at Hillcrest Primary School is played by our senior girls in Term 3. We have 1st Team and 2nd Team and play league matches on a Saturday morning at Queensmead. Our 1st Team compete at the top end of the ‘A’ League and our 2nd Team have recently been promoted to the ‘A’ League as well after winning the ‘B’ League. We have a number if girls who have made KZN Schools over the last few years.
Swimming
Swimming at Hillcrest Primary School has always been a force to be reckoned with and we now have a state of the art pool arena where we host various Inter-School and League Galas. Our combined swimming team competes in the Highways A/B League and train 3 times a week in the early mornings. Our girls and boys teams both compete in the D&D ‘B’ League and finish regularly in the Top 4. Our JP Squad swimmers in Grades 2 and 3 also participate in weekly Inter-School galas on a Thursday afternoon in the first term. All our squads pick up swimming again in the fourth term, participating in friendly galas and preparing for the next year. We also have many of our top, Level 2 and 3 swimmers representing both our District and KZN Schools each year.
Tennis
Tennis is a popular social sport and activity at Hillcrest Primary School and we have a Senior/1st Team Squad, a Junior Squad and a Social squad which is well attended. We partner with the Tennis+ Academy who train our squads and give us the professional coaching to take our pupils to the next level. Our Senior Squad plays weekly fixtures on a Monday or Thursday afternoon in Term 1 and 2. In Term 4 we play our Inter-House and School Champs.
